Advanced Recycling for Plastics
Approximately 350 Million Metric Tonnes of plastic waste are generated annually around the globe, and companies in related industries have committed nearly $1.5 billion to reduce this figure. Nalco Water supports Advanced Recycling methods for plastic waste, such as pyrolysis and other chemical recycling technologies. Government regulations, consumer behavior, and industry emphasis on sustainability are driving unique solutions to provide alternative feedstock for ethylene production.
Nalco Water is uniquely positioned to identify, diagnose and treat process and utility-related problems at advanced recycling plants, and to handle storage, transport, and processing needs for the ethylene industry or other downstream processors. Our innovative, long-term solutions help optimise operational efficiency, maximise asset reliability and profitability, all while maintaining safety, health, and environmental compliance.

Learn more about how Nalco Water is progressing the circular plastic economy, helping ethylene producers and downstream industries to achieve their decarbonization and sustainability goals through advanced recycling methods of plastic waste.

Nalco Water is Advancing the Circular Economy
Ethylene producers and downstream industries are utilizing recycled plastic feedstock, such as pyrolysis oil, to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Pyrolysis oil has been shown to significantly reduce carbon emissions over other traditional feedstocks. Nalco Water’s Advanced Recycling for Plastics programme delivers industry-leading chemical and process treatment of pyrolysis oil to enhance product stability, improve cold flow properties and control acidic corrosion.
Through a full-cycle approach, companies can use existing infrastructure and equipment to integrate recycled plastic feedstocks into their operations while achieving Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals centered on net zero and decarbonization.

Process Solutions for Pyrolysis Oils

Advanced Recycling methods for plastic waste usually create oil-fractions (Pyoil) high in olefinic and diene content, making these products prone to tars, films, and sediment formation. Our innovative and patent-pending extraction and stabilizing solutions effectively remove film- and tar-forming compounds to not only enhance the short- and long-term storage stability, but also make these Pyoils fit for cracking in ethylene furnaces.

Continued and reliable operations during winters is critical for any process plant. Many Pyoils demonstrate poor and variable cold-flow properties depending on the plastic waste stream components and different advanced recycling technologies. Nalco Water’s patented EVA-copolymer-based flow improvers ensure optimised flow behaviors in all seasons, eliminating the costly alternative of heat-tracing process equipment and transfer pipelines. Our products are also certified safe for ethylene furnaces.

The Pyoils manufactured by Advanced Recycling methods contain high acidic components, generally coming in through PVC waste and other metallic impurities, and hence demonstrate high TAN figures. The acidic nature of these streams poses significant corrosion threat not only to chemical recycling plants but also to ethylene plants that would eventually process Pyoils in their furnaces. Nalco Water’s optimised neutralizer programmes and online chloride monitoring capabilities give valuable insights and control over potential acidic corrosion.
