Advancing Strength for Recycled Paperboard and Packaging
Insight
Companía Papelera Pacifico (CPP) a recycle paper mill in Latin America, needed to increase production while still maintaining the strength of its products. The standard deviation of the strength tests was high, and due to this strength variability, the mill was reluctant to increase the machine speed and risk making off-spec production.
“Ultis allowed the mill to significantly increase their Ring Crush, a lab test completed to measure the paper’s physical qualities.”
Innovation
Nalco Water had the solution, Ultis™ Dry² Strength Technology, a dry format chemical additive which improves both strength and runnability of paper products. The addition of Ultis, resulted in a 6% increase in the overall production, allowing the mill to significantly increase their Ring Crush strength test. This improvement in productivity provided the mill a $912,000/yr. increase in profit. “The results we delivered only increased the trust that CPP has in Nalco Water,” said Eugenio Farrera, district manager, Paper, Chile and Peru.
Technologies
Nalco Water’s Ultis Dry² Strength Technology, is an advanced dry polymer chemistry. Believing that dry is better, Ultis technology can help mills achieve more consistent product quality, stronger output, increase manufacturing speed and operation savings. All while reducing transportation needs by up to 90% compared to alternative liquid dry strengths used in paperboard manufacturing due to its lighter and more compact dry platform.
