Ecolab Foundation Provides $100,000 to Support HeatShare Programme
Contribution associated with company’s commitment to community solar gardens

February 10, 2015

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Feb. 10, 2015 – The Ecolab Foundation today announced a $100,000 commitment to The Salvation Army Northern Division’s HeatShare programme, which provides emergency utility assistance and furnace repairs for people in need. The contribution coincides with Ecolab’s recently announced participation in Minnesota’s newest alternative energy programme, which utilizes community solar gardens – shared solar panel sites with grid-connected subscribers – to offset electricity use.

The solar gardens will be developed under the Xcel Energy Solar* Rewards Community Programme, which launched in December 2014 in Minnesota, and will deliver electricity to Minnesota’s local grid. As a subscriber, Ecolab will offset approximately 90 percent of the electricity it purchases in Minnesota.

“Our goal in subscribing to the community solar garden programme is to help promote the development of alternative energy sources in Minnesota,” said Kris Taylor, vice president of Community Relations for Ecolab. “Through the subscription, we have the ability to lock in our electricity rates during our participation in the programme, which will likely result in lower energy costs in the future. In advance of any savings we may realize, we want to contribute funds to the HeatShare programme in Minnesota and pursue additional alternative energy investments within our operations.”

The Salvation Army HeatShare programme provides emergency utility assistance for people with no place left to turn. The programme is funded in part by Salvation Army donors and customers of local utility companies. Annually, more than 4,000 households receive an average of $370 to keep their homes warm, but the requests for assistance far outnumber the programme’s resources. Nearly 40,000 households request HeatShare assistance each year.

“We strive to make decisions that are in the best interest of our customers, our company and our communities,” said Taylor. “We believe our participation in the community solar garden programme and our ongoing commitment to the HeatShare programme are decisions that benefit both Ecolab and Minnesota.”
